February 24, 2010New Ideas in Business EducationCABEA continues to grow, with 58 members attending this year's Spring 2010 Workshop. We are so grateful to our organizers, presenters, and sponsors. We are already planning our next workshop for the Fall. A huge thank you goes to Judy Dunne, Director of Articulation, at the Illinois Institute of Art—Schaumburg for hosting our CABEA workshop. Our program started with a delicious continental breakfast, followed by an informative presentation from the Illinois Institute of Art. As a Web Page Design instructor, I was especially happy to learn about their high job placement rates for their web design graduates. Next, Joe Navickas of Deerfield High School gave a well prepared presentation on the new college level high school accounting curriculum which allows students the opportunity to earn college credit from Kansas State University. During the 2012-2013 school year Dr. Dan Deines of Kansas State University and Dr. Joe Bittner of the University of Connecticut plan to present to the AP Board. In order to make this successful, it’s important that we build student participation in our high schools today. Our third topic, Virtual Enterprises International was presented by Lisa Dandre, Barb Schmit, and Kendra Lee of St. Charles North and East High Schools. This capstone Business Education course is becoming very popular at their schools, as well as schools in New York, Tennessee, California, Virginia, South Carolina, and in Europe! As part of their presentation, they showed a video with several St. Charles student testimonials. Check out the website at www.veinternational.org. After our fabulous lunch (sponsored by Linda Alexander of Glencoe McGraw-Hill), we had fun participating in “What's in Your Learner Centered Toolbox?” presented by Heidi Eaton and Linda Conniff of Elgin Community College. Linda and Heidi had all of us involved as we learned to engage students in conversation, and to facilitate learning. We had fun as we participated in group activities involving colored balls, giant PostIt notes, and more. These energizing activities were a great way to end the day and look forward to new lesson plans. The workshop closed with numerous door prizes as participants completed their evaluation forms. According to the feedback, this really was the best CABEA workshop yet. Thank you to all our participants, presenters, and sponsors! We are looking forward to our Fall 2010 Workshop to be held at Great America in Gurnee. |

CABEA held its Fall workshop at the College of Lake County. Huge thanks to Liliana Ware, Business Division Assistant and Academic Advisor at the College of Lake County for providing this wonderful facility again. Nearly Fifty CABEA members came from from miles around--some traveled over 2 hours, as they perservered through more and more road construction. However, the workshop was well worth the trip. Not only did we have the two wonderful presentations featured in our program, we were privileged with additional presentations by Platos Closet and Geotome. Pam Ohman of Platos Closet described the three classroom presentations she offers local high schools. The three presentations would be perfect additions to General Business, Marketing, and Fashion Marketing courses. For further information about Pam's program, contact her at platos_closet_il@sbcglobal.net. Larry Specht demonstrated his Website, Geotome. His website is the all-in-one local solution to everything you need to know about any and every twon in the USA and its territories. Visit his website at www.geotome.com. Larry would be a great presenter for your Webpage Design course. Door Prizes were generously provided by Current Curriculum (currentcurriculum.com) which is part of C.W. Publications (cwpub.com) and by Business Education Publishing (bepublishing.com). Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc (g-w.com).provided door prizes as well, and sponsored our lunch. Thank you! This allowed us to set the cost of the workshop--including Panera Bread breakfast and lunch--at only $10. Pete Hostrawser, Department Head of the Business Education Division at Oak Park and River Forest High School share the creative methods they used to successfully increase their enrollment and serve more high school students at OPRF. After the workshop, PowerPoints, Spreadsheets, and other helpful documents were made available to all CABEA workshop attendees. Debra Kellum and Nancy Shipley of Libertyville High School provided valuable information about the The Vernon Hills/Libertyville Business Advisory Council and how they keep their programs in line with the real business world. As with Pete, Debra and Nancy made ther materials available to all CABEA workshop attendees. Thank you! We also spent time collaborating with fellow Business Education teachers. Each person received a directory of workshop attendees, including names, high school, email address, and courses taught. This directory proved to be valuable not only during the workshop, but will be remain a valuable tool to help each member connect with other teachers in the same curriculum area. |
