New Ideas in Business Education

Program | Driving Directions

CABEA continues to grow, with 58 members attending this year's Spring 2010 Workshop. We are so grateful to our organizers, presenters, and sponsors. We are already planning our next workshop for the Fall.

A huge thank you goes to Judy Dunne, Director of Articulation, at the Illinois Institute of Art—Schaumburg for hosting our CABEA workshop.

Our program started with a delicious continental breakfast, followed by an informative presentation from the Illinois Institute of Art.  As a Web Page Design instructor, I was especially happy to learn about their high job placement rates for their web design graduates.

Next, Joe Navickas of Deerfield High School gave a well prepared presentation on the new college level high school accounting curriculum which allows students the opportunity to earn college credit from Kansas State University.  During the 2012-2013 school year Dr. Dan Deines of Kansas State University and Dr. Joe Bittner of the University of Connecticut plan to present to the AP Board.  In order to make this successful, it’s important that we build student participation in our high schools today.

Our third topic, Virtual Enterprises International was presented by Lisa Dandre, Barb Schmit, and Kendra Lee of St. Charles North and East High Schools.  This capstone Business Education course is becoming very popular at their schools, as well as schools in New York, Tennessee, California, Virginia, South Carolina, and in Europe!   As part of their presentation, they showed a video with several St. Charles student testimonials.  Check out the website at www.veinternational.org.
Our lunch was structured to give teachers a chance to network with each other.  To organize the networking, we placed signs at each of the lunch tables directing teachers to the table/topic of their choice (Intro to Business, Computer Applications…)  Also, each person was given a directory of all CABEA Spring Workshop attendees, including their contact information and network topic.   An optional tour of the facilities at the Illinois Institute of Art was also provided.

After our fabulous lunch (sponsored by Linda Alexander of Glencoe McGraw-Hill), we had fun participating in “What's in Your Learner Centered Toolbox?” presented by Heidi Eaton and Linda Conniff of Elgin Community College.  Linda and Heidi had all of us involved as we learned to engage students in conversation, and to facilitate learning.  We had fun as we participated in group activities involving colored balls, giant PostIt notes, and more.  These energizing activities were a great way to end the day and look forward to new lesson plans.

The workshop closed with numerous door prizes as participants completed their evaluation forms.  According to the feedback, this really was the best CABEA workshop yet.  Thank you to all our participants, presenters, and sponsors!

We are looking forward to our Fall 2010 Workshop to be held at Great America in Gurnee.

Promote Your Business Education Programs

Program | Driving Directions | Campus Map

"It was very well done!" "Great promotion ideas!" "All sessions were very helpful" "I plan to implement these ideas at my high school" "Very informative" These are some of the comments written by the CABEA Workshop attendees on the evaluation form. All comments were very positive and attendees are already looking forward to our next workshop.

CABEA held its Fall workshop at the College of Lake County. Huge thanks to Liliana Ware, Business Division Assistant and Academic Advisor at the College of Lake County for providing this wonderful facility again.

Nearly Fifty CABEA members came from from miles around--some traveled over 2 hours, as they perservered through more and more road construction. However, the workshop was well worth the trip. Not only did we have the two wonderful presentations featured in our program, we were privileged with additional presentations by Platos Closet and Geotome.

Pam Ohman of Platos Closet described the three classroom presentations she offers local high schools. The three presentations would be perfect additions to General Business, Marketing, and Fashion Marketing courses. For further information about Pam's program, contact her at platos_closet_il@sbcglobal.net.

Larry Specht demonstrated his Website, Geotome. His website is the all-in-one local solution to everything you need to know about any and every twon in the USA and its territories. Visit his website at www.geotome.com. Larry would be a great presenter for your Webpage Design course.

Door Prizes were generously provided by Current Curriculum (currentcurriculum.com) which is part of C.W. Publications (cwpub.com) and by Business Education Publishing (bepublishing.com).

Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc (g-w.com).provided door prizes as well, and sponsored our lunch. Thank you! This allowed us to set the cost of the workshop--including Panera Bread breakfast and lunch--at only $10.

Pete Hostrawser, Department Head of the Business Education Division at Oak Park and River Forest High School share the creative methods they used to successfully increase their enrollment and serve more high school students at OPRF. After the workshop, PowerPoints, Spreadsheets, and other helpful documents were made available to all CABEA workshop attendees.

Debra Kellum and Nancy Shipley of Libertyville High School provided valuable information about the The Vernon Hills/Libertyville Business Advisory Council and how they keep their programs in line with the real business world. As with Pete, Debra and Nancy made ther materials available to all CABEA workshop attendees. Thank you!

We also spent time collaborating with fellow Business Education teachers. Each person received a directory of workshop attendees, including names, high school, email address, and courses taught. This directory proved to be valuable not only during the workshop, but will be remain a valuable tool to help each member connect with other teachers in the same curriculum area.

Center for Professional Development,
Computer Gaming and Entertainment Technology, and
FREE Web Authoring Software for Students and Schools

Program

CABEA held its Spring Workshop at Elmhurst College.  We had three outstanding presenters, Larry Carroll, Jim Dauer, and Corinne Hoisington. We want to give a special thanks to Linda Krause, Associate Professor at Elmhurst College for providing the meeting room, continental breakfast and buffet lunch for the cabea members and to Mary Sommers, Jim Walsh, and Maureen Mitchell for providing door prizes and free courseware samples.

Linda Hefferin, our IBEA President addressed the CABEA members and spoke of the wonderful presentations we can expect at our National Business Education Association annual conference, to be held in Chicago this April. The location of this event rotates among the different NBEA regions in the United States. We are all looking forward to attending this national event in Chicago this year.

Our first presenter, Lawrence B. Carroll, Psy.D., M.B.A., is the Director of the Center for Professional Excellence at Elmhurst College.  Larry Carroll’s background is in the areas of organization development and clinical psychology. His interests lie in teaching, conducting research, and consulting in the areas of organization development, group process, career/life planning, facilitation, and team building. He has worked with a number of organizations and individuals with strategic planning approaches to organizational, professional, and personal development.  CABEA members thoroughly enjoyed his presentation about the Center for Professional Excellence and had many questions for Dr. Carroll.

James A. Dauer, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Computer Game and Entertainment Technology Department at Elmhurst College.  Dr. Dauer’s current research focuses on expert systems, which use artificial intelligence to emulate human cognition.  He is looking forward to visiting high schools to inform students of the vast opportunities in this new career area.  After Dr. Dauer’s presentation, Elmhurst counselors joined CABEA members for lunch to further discuss their programs in this exciting area of technology.

Corinne Hoisington is a professor at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, Virginia, with over 20 years of teaching experience.  Professor Hoisington is the 2004 recipient of the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in Computer Programming award.  A dynamic speaker, she regularly presents on new technology and education trends to instructors across the United States.  She was a presenter at IBEA’s annual conference in November 2008.  Corinne recently authored a book with Gary Shelly titled Visual Basic 2008 and the video projects The Guided Tour of Office 2007, The Guided Tour of Vista, and The Guided Tour of Expression Web. Her newest project is The Guided Tour of Hot Technologies.

At the CABEA Fall Workshop, through a live web conference, Professor Hoisington joined us from Las Vegas.  She demonstrated Microsoft Expressions Blend and gave us a preview of the next release of Microsoft’s operating system, Windows 7.     Microsoft Expressions is a web authoring tool comparable to Adobe Creative Suite. To see how your school and students can receive free copies of Expressions Blend, visit www.Dreamspark.com

Mary Sommers, Executive Sales Representative at Cengage Learning (Course Technology, Delmar, South-Western) joined us at the workshop, coordinated the web conference with Professor Hoisington, and provided CABEA members with many door prizes and examination copies of numerous courseware titles in the area of Business Education.  Jim Walsh of Goodheart-Wilcox Publisher and Maureen Mitchell of BE Publishing also provided door prizes and courseware examination copies.  Every CABEA workshop attendee won at least one prize.

There were valuable tips exchanged among teachers as we visited with one another.  It was fun to see familiar faces and to meet new colleagues.  The CABEA workshops always offer a great opportunity for networking.

The cabea.org site is another great way to share lesson plan ideas with fellow Business Education teachers. Visit cabea.org and click the resources page to see how easy it is to share ideas throughout the year.

Organizing CABEA Workshops has truly been a group effort among all CABEA officers and board members.  Soon we will begin planning our Fall 2009 workshop.  If you have any suggestions for this important event, please contact Mary Ellen Peterson, CABEA Secretary at mpeterson@cusd220.org.
